How to wear flower earrings, by day and in the evening

A flower earring lives in movement, and that shows best in profile, when a turn of the head sets one petal edge-on to the light and a fraction of a second later opens the whole cup. Standing still, the same pair looks quieter than it did in the mirror, where earrings get studied from one side and then the other. A flower works exactly as well as the space around it is empty. A crew-neck sweater turns out to be a better backdrop for such a pair than a bare-shouldered dress, though flower earrings are usually bought with the dress in mind.

Under a sweater, under headphones

From October to April, earrings are the only jewelry still visible from outside, because a necklace disappears under the collar and a bracelet hides inside a sleeve. A flower against wool reads fuller than it does on a bare neck, since the matte pile kills the glare and the petal steps forward off it. The same pair that looked like a modest detail in summer carries the whole top half of an outfit in December.

Texture has a caveat. Chunky knit catches anything that swings, so stud earrings make more sense under a bulky sweater, with the post holding the flower flat against the lobe. That kind of earring does not tangle in a headphone cord and survives a hat pulled on over it. Nor does it stay behind in a scarf when the scarf comes off indoors in one tug. Winter adds a collar that rubs the lobe with every step, and a drop just swings against it for nothing. Wool and mohair pick up static as well, which glues tiny fibers to the petals and keeps them there until evening. Fine cashmere, a shirt, a coat worn with the neck open — any construction works with those.

A medium size and a quiet color suit calls and the office. Such earrings show up well on camera, yet they do not flare and do not turn into a separate participant in the meeting when you swivel to the second monitor. In the evening, with the neck bare

In the evening a flower needs movement. A drop on a hook hangs below the lobe, swings as the head turns and catches light where a stud stays still, and in a restaurant lit by spots the difference between the two shows at once. Every turn of the head gives a new flash, while a stud under the same lamps glows evenly. By candlelight the petal lays a soft shadow along the cheekbone, and photographs pick that up better than the eye does.

A dress with bare shoulders or a deep neckline is still the most natural setting for a flower at the lobe, and no necklace is needed with it. If the dress carries a large print, keep the petals plain, because two patterns near the face start arguing and the one closer to the eyes always wins. Length matters too, and the easiest case is when the lowest point of the flower stops short of the jawline, otherwise the earring catches the neckline every time you lean forward. A bun or a low ponytail uncovers the lobe completely, and a short crop doubles the effect. In that situation a neat stud holds an outfit together as well as a big drop does, simply because nothing is in its way.

One rule stays strict in the evening. Only one piece works near the face, and earrings alongside a noticeable necklace read as an argument between two things that neither of them wins. For the same reason a flower goes smaller next to heavy eyeglass frames: the frame already occupies the space by the cheekbone, and a second volume beside it is one too many.

Summer and hair worn down

Loose hair hides the lobe, and a small stud disappears into it entirely. Two ways out. Either the flower is noticeably larger than the lobe and reaches past the hair on its own, with no tucking behind the ear every ten minutes. Or length, the kind that shows from under the hair when you turn your head or the wind moves it.

Summer is kinder to a large flower, because bare shoulders and a tanned neck give pale petals a background they read against graphically. A high bun gives the lobe its visibility back, and then even a small stud does the job. Wind on the coast winds hair around a drop, and the strand has to be freed slowly, because a sharp movement usually ends in a bent petal. Sunscreen adds itself to the list, laying a film over everything it touches, so earrings go on after it has soaked in, come off first in the evening and get wiped with a dry cloth before they are put away.

Every petal is set in place by hand, so no pair holds two identical flowers. Lay the earrings side by side on a table and the difference in the curve is visible without a loupe. We could not repeat a pair detail for detail even if we wanted to, so a model that sells will not come back in stock, and a different one will be assembled in its place.

Hand assembly lasts longer if the earrings come off before a shower or a pool. Hot steam does the most damage to this kind of construction, and chlorinated water leaves a dull film on the beads that a dry brush will no longer lift. Put the earrings on last, after cream and hairspray, and clean them with a soft dry makeup brush, the one used to sweep off powder. Dust collects between petals faster than it does on a smooth chain, and it is worth clearing every couple of weeks. Alcohol and the ultrasonic bath used on chains are both off limits for a flower.

One detail matters about the stones in a pair like this. Moonstone is softer than quartz, and in a shared box it picks up marks from neighboring pendants within a couple of months. Size and shape for a particular face

Choosing comes down to one simple decision: the earring either repeats the shape of the face and strengthens it, or argues with it and balances it out. A large round flower at cheek level adds width where there is already enough of it. With a round face, take a shape with elongated petals, or a drop that carries the volume below the cheekbones. With a long face it is the other way round, the flower sits right at the lobe, while long drops pull the oval further down and work against it. Rounded petals soften a heavy jawline, whereas hard geometry beside it reads sharper. It is easier to check the proportion not against face types from a chart but against the distance from lobe to jaw angle, which the drop should fit inside completely.

The weight of a large drop makes itself felt by evening, especially if the piercing has been stretched by heavy earrings before. A stud has no such trouble, the load goes onto the post rather than the lower edge of the lobe. Hair length decides as much as face shape does. A chin-length cut opens the lobe on any movement, and the size can be whatever you like. Shoulder-length hair is the borderline case, where the earring hides under a strand when you are still and shows in full when you turn your head, and the width of the flower decides everything. Past the shoulder blades a stud does not show at all, whatever it cost — a longer drop is the only option left.
