How to Care for Natural Stone Jewelry

Natural stone jewelry does not demand complicated care — but it rewards a gentle touch. These rules will extend the life of both the stone and the steel and brass fittings.

Rule 1. Last on, first off

Jewelry is the finishing touch. Put it on after cosmetics, perfume and hairspray: the alcohol and oils they contain leave a film on the stone that dulls its luster. In the evening, take your jewelry off first — before washing up.

Rule 2. Water is not a friend

Remove jewelry before the shower, the pool and washing dishes. Chlorinated and sea water dull a stone's polish, and brass fittings darken faster than they naturally would when constantly damp. A few raindrops are harmless — just blot the piece with a soft cloth.

Rule 3. Store pieces separately

Rule 4. Clean gently

• Every two to three weeks, wipe the stones with a dry microfiber cloth.
• For visible dirt — a cotton swab slightly dampened with clean water, then dry immediately.

Rule 5. Respect each stone's character

Every mineral has its weaknesses. Malachite is soft and fears acids — even lemon juice leaves a mark. Rose quartz can fade in direct sunlight, so do not leave it on a windowsill.
