Labradorite: The Northern Lights Stone

Labradorite is a chameleon stone. At rest it is dark grey, almost black — but turn it toward the light and flashes of blue, green, gold and copper ignite inside. The effect is called labradorescence, and the stone itself is often compared to the northern lights sealed in a mineral.

History

Europe discovered labradorite in the 18th century, when it was found on the Labrador Peninsula in Canada — hence the name. The stone became fashionable overnight: it was set into snuffboxes and rings, and in Russia labradorite adorned the palace interiors of St. Petersburg. The Inuit believed the stone held northern lights fallen from the sky.

Labradorite is traditionally credited with protective qualities and the power to awaken creativity. It is called the stone of transformation, believed to support you through life's transitions. How to choose

Look at the play of light: in a fine labradorite the flashes cover a noticeable part of the surface and shift color as you turn it. A flat grey stone with no iridescence is just feldspar. Blue and green flashes are most common; gold and violet are rarer and more prized.
